Frequently Asked Questions

What is an IBCLC and how they can help

An IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) is a highly trained, internationally credentialed healthcare professional who specialises in breastfeeding and human lactation. IBCLCs provide expert clinical assessment, education and evidence-based support to families experiencing challenges such as pain, poor latch, low milk supply and complex feeding concerns. They also offer guidance on feeding techniques, expressing and pump use, and maintaining milk supply in a variety of settings, including hospitals, community health services and private practice.

IBCLCs are recognized as the gold standard in lactation care, having completed extensive tertiary-level education, supervised clinical practice and a comprehensive international examination administered by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE). This rigorous training ensures IBCLCs are highly qualified to manage both routine and complex breastfeeding situations.

How appointments work

I offer both in-home consultations and telehealth (online) appointments. If you are interested in accessing my services, please contact me via email or message and we can determine the most suitable appointment type, along with a convenient date and time.

Prior to your appointment, you will be provided with intake forms to complete, including a comprehensive health history, privacy policy, and terms and conditions.

During your consultation, we will discuss your history, current concerns and breastfeeding goals. I will provide tailored education and we will work collaboratively to develop an individualised care plan to support you moving forward. Appointment durations may vary — please refer to the services page for timeframes and fee information. I will generally follow up within 2–3 days via phone or email to check on your progress.

Should you require additional support, follow-up consultations are available both in person and via telehealth.

Please see the page on services for more detailed information on what an appointment might involve.

When is the ideal time to schedule an appointment?

This depends on the reason for an appointment. Many mothers book appointments post birth when a concern arises. Some mothers prefer education and support prior to birth. If wanting to learn about breastfeeding & have an individual plan for breastfeeding prior to your baby's birth, booking an antenatal appointment in your third trimester is preferable.

Payments

To secure your appointment, a $20-$50 deposit is required at the time of booking – dependent on the services booked. An invoice will be issued when your booking is confirmed, with the remaining balance due on the day of your appointment. A receipt will be provided once payment has been received. Payment can be made via bank transfer or cash.

Private health insurance

Some private health insurance providers offer rebates for lactation consultant services. We recommend checking with your insurer to see whether this applies to your cover
